Ambient Learning Spaces

Period: From January 2008 to September 2021

Projektbeschreibung

In the future, people will relate to a digitally enriched spatial environment not only via keyboard and screen, but with their entire body. Body-worn computer systems such as smartwatches, smart jewelry and interactive clothing, mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets, digitally enriched everyday objects, as well as smart and reactive spaces or spatial installations will also radically change our learning spaces. A key role is played by the cross-system, Internet-based networking of applications with specific body and space references.

In the research project Ambient Learning Spaces (ALS), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), new system models, media-didactic methods and prototypical systems were developed, tested and evaluated. In a systematic way, the handling and behavior of especially children and adolescents with the latest body- and space-related media technologies are investigated and new concepts for teaching these important competencies are developed for the future. Pilot models and evaluations took place in schools, museums, biotopes and urban spaces.

Beginning in 2008, basic research was funded by the DFG as part of the Ambient Learning Spaces (ALS) project at IMIS at the University of Lübeck. From 2016 to 2021, the DFG funded a so-called knowledge transfer project of the same name as a follow-up project. The knowledge transfer project served to implement the scientific findings of the previous basic research project in the context of real-world prototypical applications in schools and museums in ongoing practical operation and to further optimize them in terms of practicality and usability. Installations and field studies on ALS were realized in the context of everyday use of ALS learning applications in schools and museums.
